More and more people use mobile gadgets to access online content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is steadily increasing. To fulfill this demand, the organization that administers the generic TLDs, ICANN, launched the .MOBI domain name extension in 2005. The first registrations were allowed in September 2006, and the idea behind this TLD is that all websites that use it have to comply with certain terms. In other words, all dot MOBI websites must be designed to be accessed correctly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry. These have to do with how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.
The requirements have raised some worries taking into consideration that the universal extension is the only one that specifies what devices ought to be able to access a website and the way in which this has to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be created in such a way as to be accessed by most browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
